Eikonprojekt - A Gift for Trastevere

When posters go up in the street, you never know how long they'll last. Could be 2 hours, 24 hours, or a whole year. If I don't have my camera when I pass something, I always know there's a huge risk it will be gone when I come back, but this is all part of the game. When the artists put things up, they know there's a good chance it will get destroyed immediately and so when things stay up for a long time, there's a sort of pride, first that you picked the right spot and second that it was so appreciated that no one wanted to rip it down.

Last June Omino71 and Mr. Klevra spent a whole evening putting up posters all around the city and I went out the next day to photograph them all. I've never been so tired! By the time I got to the last one, about 8 hours later, in Trastevere, I was so happy to be done. The funny thing is, it's this last one that I photographed that stayed up the longest. Located right around the corner from Santa Maria in Trastevere, I saw an image of it on Eternally Cool just a few months ago. Tattered and worn, the poster had lived on, so it made perfect sense that they wanted to put a new poster up in the same place as a sort of celebration. The new poster, which shows them painting a Madonna, is a little hint for the people who had been staring at the original for the past year. Now they can finally understand who gave them this little artistic gift....may it last for another year!

Street Life

Before I go to some programed posts which, I will forewarn you, are going to be all street art, I wanted to post this photo I took in the Campo de' Fiori today. He was settling into his spot on the street and had just unpacked what appeared to be a large bottle of whiskey.

Knock Knock

I was intrigued by this door knocker on via Urbana today and had to take a photo. It's like he's creepily welcoming you home. My summer vacation starts tomorrow and runs all next week, so posting will be sporadic. I hope to program some posts with new shots of Invaders that I've taken and a few other things, but I'm not sure how much time I'll have. Back to live posting on August 9.

Invader - I Love Rome

Just took a photo of one of my favorite invaders yet! I love how Invader is personalizing the mosaics to Rome. This one is close to Termini Station and thanks to Katie at ParlaFood for letting me know where it was. To get more of the urban context and surroundings, check out another image I took on Flickr.

Art Street

A new piece by Eikonprojekt on Viale dell'Arte (AKA "Art Street) in the EUR district of Rome, where, by the way, I saw an alarming amount of prostitutes on Saturday night.

Cicacia Boom

When I first moved here and was stupid enough to be taking taxis alot, I noticed that the receipts often had an ad for this strip club near the via Veneto. I happened to walk by it when going to the Swiss Academy, so just had to get a photo. I guess it must be strip club alley, as another called "Dolce Vita" (how original) and some sort of piano bar with a "floor show" are right down the street. Another thing I noticed is that the whole area around via Veneto looks like you stepped back in time to the late 1970s/early 1980s....I don't think any of the signs for the restaurants or the decor has been updated since then.
